Case Studies:
Automated Machinery for the Copper Fitting and Plumbing Industry
Midstates has designed and built copper fitting fab centers for the plumbing industry over the past 15 years. These fab centers produce 45 and 90 degree elbow fittings from a blank tube length. The tube blanks are hopper feed / oriented and then auto loaded to the fab center. A first operation form station mandrel forms the tube blanks to a 45 degree or 90 degree Dedicated Elbow shape.
The formed elbow blanks are then auto transferred to a sizing station where the elbows are sized for cup or street connections. The sized elbows are then auto transferred to a facing station where facing heads finish Machine the elbow ends to final dimension. The finished elbows are then transferred to a drop off shut where parts can be inspected before final boxing. These fab centers are capable of running 4 to 6 sec.
Cycles producing two elbows per cycle on dedicated machines. One operator can maintain blank tube hopper supply and over see operations on three to Four machines at a time. Utilizing Camco pick & place and Camco inline type transfer systems our transfer pick & Place cycle times are as fast as 1.5 sec. The fixed cam cut part transfer units are dependable and far faster than a robotic arm system (No Program or Power Surge problems here). /
Roll Form Machines, Tooling and Flying Cutoff Dies
Midstates has been an active designer & builder of specialized Roll Forming Machines, Equipment and Tooling for the past 20 years. Along with Roll Former Machines we have supplied the Flying Cutoff Tooling for the major roof and side metal suppliers such as Fabwel inc., A.M.C inc., Fabwel Equipment, and Owens Corning Corp.
Due to the addition of a new Clausing / Harrison Alpha C.N.C. Lathe Midstates now has the ability to turn intricate roll form contours 12.0 inch diameter thru 80.0 inches long and shorter segmented sections up to 20.0 diameters. Also the ALPHA Control has a live tooling option which enables the machining of gear and sprocket keyways without removing the detail from the lathe, saving the customer additional time and labor costs. In the past these large long rolls were sent to Chicago to be turned where a higher shop rate for machining was paid along with shipping costs.
